PRICE £350

YOU don’t get much for £350 when you buy the Clarity Aloft headset – but that’s the point. It’s the headset for minimalists. Just a wire frame which fits around the back of head and over the ears with a lightweight mike boom and ear plugs.

It took a while to put the headset on properly the first time but weighing next to nothing, the only reminders that the headset is there are the ear plugs.

The ear plugs are hard plastic units with soft foam tips. These expand to fit your ear (and are replaceable – spares come with the set) and theoretically block out ambient noise.

Phil O'Donoghue testing the headset

The mike is a high-quality noise-cancelling Electret unit, with low volume voice activation.

It's claimed to have the lowest distortion in an aviation microphone.

The manufacturer says all components are to the highest spec and the headset is used in military helos.

That’s the claim, but while I found the headset very comfortable on a four-hour flight from Cannes to Cambridge recently, it was not the quietest set I’ve ever used.

We were flying a Diamond Twin and the drone from the outboard engine made its way through and was quite intrusive. It didn’t interfere with hearing what ATC was saying, or others in the cockpit, but I’d rather having been wearing a top-notch ANR set such as Bose or David Clark. Apparently, aerobatic pilots love the Clarity Aloft because of the unit’s low weight and simplicity.

This is embarrassing - both pictures in this article show the Clarity Aloft being worn upside down... the metal band is supposed to be worn behind the neck, not over the crown of the head!

Having owned and used a Clarity Aloft for the last 150 hours of my flying, I would say that the quality of the noise reduction is very dependent upon how well I've fitted the plugs into my ears. With a little practice it is easy, but the first few times I tried them I got quite variable noise attenuation. When you get it right, however, the noise attenuation is incredible. Some low frequency sound does get through - about as much as with an ANR headset, but mid-range and high frequency noise is reduced well below that in even the best ANR headset.

In summary, my experience is that the Clarity Aloft is the lightest, quietest and most comfortable headset I've used - and it stays in position during aerobatics!
