GARMIN launched a brand new product today, the large-screen
GPSMAP 695.
The 695 is an all new, tablet-style device with a large, 7-inch
portrait, sunlight readable screen. Garmin claims pilots will be able to read the display day or night.
The bezel that
frames the screen has multiple keys on the bottom and right sides. Also on the
display’s right side is a rotary knob/joystick, similar to the G1000’s
joystick, which lets pilots enter airport identifiers, pan the map, or scroll to
page and sub-page groups.
Gary Kelley, Garmin’s vice president of marketing said the 695,
“Gives pilots what they have been looking for, a GPS with a large screen, and
European feature rich information. It’s our most feature rich, easy-to-use
aviation portable, and is ideal for aiding those wanting to minimise clutter by
providing essential backup situational awareness while in the cockpit.”
Pilots also have the opportunity to have IFR sectional maps displayed in a large screen format. This mode displays a map similar
to a standard enroute chart with important features such as High and Low Airways, Minimum Enroute Altitude (MEA) and leg distance.
The 695’s IFR map
mode also offers more situational awareness than traditional charts with major visual reference points such as rivers, country
boundaries, roads and railways and town outlines.
The GPSMAP 695 is available in November for $2895 (around £2000).
The 695 package includes a yoke mount, cigarette-lighter adapter, AC adapter
cable, USB-to-PC interface cable, low-profile remote GPS antenna, unit cover,
free Jeppesen update certificate, owner’s manual and quick-reference
guide.
There is an exclusive video of the Garmin’s GPS695 on
