The British firm’s new TT21 transponder nudges the scales at a
featherweight 450g, a fraction under 1lb, and takes up less space than any
previous comparable system: the same size as a small Ribena carton, the firm
says.
For any owners or pilot looking to add Mode S to an existing aircraft,
or who will be facing a compulsory fitment if they expect to fly into TMZ areas
from March 2012, it’s great news.
Trig boss Andy Davis told LOOP: “When we made the TT31 [Trig’s first
Mode S transponder] we made it to fit straight in place of the Bendix/King
KT76C, but there was a lot of fresh air in the box, due to the technology. With
the TT21 there is no fresh air in either the transponder or the controller.”
Trig say the controller fits into any panel, and needs just few centimetres
behind for the connectors and static port interface. While this is good news
for any aircraft owner, it is particularly relevant to pilots of microlighters,
gliders and classics, where every bit of space and weight counts.
The control panel is splash proof for open cockpit installations,
while Trig claim this is the first Mode-S “for everyone”. Davis said: “As the
two parts can be 10ft apart its great for gliders that have their transponders
mid-ship. And due to the lightness microlights won’t have to worry so much about
their 450kg weight limit.“
The unit can be fitted structurally, or to a quick release tray for
easy removal and added security.
Conventional and Ultra Compact Mounting.
Trig are hoping that the TT21 will be ready to ship by February 2009.
“We have a few deadlines to meet as does EASA but there should be no reason why
it won’t be ready by February with all the documents ready. We’re building up
an order book already.”
The price is not yet fixed, but is expected to be around the £1550
mark. For more information Click here
