F1 star Lewis Hamilton 'raced' a LearJet 60XR bizjet down the runway at the Farnborough Air Show today.

As airshow spectators looked on, Hamilton rocketed along the TAG Farnborough runway in his Vodafone McLaren Mercedes race car while the Learjet 60XR jet sped through the air just 200 feet overhead.

The big event kicked off the flying display at the 46th edition of the Farnborough International Airshow, and marked Hamilton's first ever appearance at the show.

"Between driving the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes on the race track, and traveling to my race destinations in high-speed Learjet aircraft, I've grown quite used to spending time in high performance machines," said Lewis Hamilton.

"What a fantastic event, and what an amazing highlight in the ongoing Year of Learjet celebrations," exclaimed Steven Ridolfi, president, Bombardier Business Aircraft.

"Lewis Hamilton continues to impress the world with his outstanding performance in Formula One racing, and like Lewis, the Learjet brand is leading the way in the arena of corporate aviation, making the two a perfect pair."

The Farnborough event is one of a series of activities in the Year of Learjet - a year long celebration leading to the 45th anniversary, in October 2008, of the first flight of a Learjet aircraft. Since acquiring Learjet Inc. in 1990, Bombardier has launched eight high-performance and fuel-efficient aircraft, the most recent being the Learjet 85 aircraft.
