THE absolute world speed record for flying around the world in a helicopter set by Americans Scott Kasprowicz and Steve Sheik in August has been ratified by the FAI, the world aviation sport authority.
The new record is 136.7km/h, or 73.8kt, which includes time spent on the ground for refuelling, maintenance and crew rest. The aircraft’s average speed in the air was around 150kt.
The record was set from 7-18 August 2008, and took 11 days 7 hours 2 minutes for the 20,000nm route. The apir flew an AgustaWestland Grand 109S and their toute took them New York, NY (USA) - Greenland - Aberdeen (UK) - Milano (Italy) - St. Petersburg (Russia) - Novosibirsk (Russia) - Fairbanks, AK (USA) - Calgary, AB (Canada) - Santa Fe, NM (USA) - New York, NY (USA).
